#2 Oregon Drills Wyoming

Redshirt senior quarterback Colby Kirkegaard passed for 284 yards and two TDs, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a powerful Oregon squad, as the University of Wyoming football team lost 48-14 to suffer its first loss of the year.

Wyoming (2-1, 1-0 Mountain West) took an early 7-0 lead over No. 2 Oregon (3-0) in front of a crowd of 56,533, but UO reeled off 41-unanswered to take control in the second and third quarters.

Junior running back Shaun Wick tallied 122 yards rushing and sophomore wide receiver Tanner Gentry hauled in his first career TD reception. Redshirt sophomore running back D.J. May added 143 yards of total offense, along with one receiving score.

Early on, UW’s defense stood tall on Oregon’s first possession. The Ducks went 13 plays and 78 yards, all the way to the UW 2. But three-straight rushes were turned away, culminating in fourth-down stop from the defense.

That gave the Pokes the ball back with 6:29 remaining in the first quarter. UW churned out four first downs on their second possession, which comprised 11 plays and 98 yards in five minutes, 27 seconds. The Cowboy drive ended with an 18-yard corner route TD from Kirkegaard to Gentry for the score.

After 15 minutes, the Pokes led the second-ranked Ducks 7-0. But the second quarter was all Oregon, as the Ducks posted four TDs to lead 27-7 at halftime. UO added another TD just 1:41 into the third quarter to lead 34-7. The Ducks tacked on one more TD to lead 41-7.

Kirkegaard found May from 7 yards out to draw closer at 41-14 with 14:03 remaining, but Oregon scored once more with 8:30 left to seal it.

The Cowboys ran and passed the ball effectively, but were outgained by the UO 556-439. Turnovers also played a part in the loss, as UW gave the ball up three times, while Oregon had zero turnovers. Oregon did not punt until 5:46 remaining in the third quarter.

Wyoming returns home next week to face Florida Atlantic on Saturday. Kick off will be at 2 p.m. MT from War Memorial Stadium.
