Just three days after his team won the World Series, St. Louis Cardinals Manager Tony La Russa has announced his retirement. La Russa spent 33 years as a big league manager winning two world championships, two with St. Louis and one with Oakland.  He retires as the third winningest manager in Major League Baseball history.

Also in baseball, the Colorado Rockies are picking up the option for Jason Giambi for next season, for bargin basement price of one million dollars. The 40-year old hit 13 home runs and drove in 32 runs in 131 at bats last season.

On Monday Night Football, the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Diego Chargers 23-20 in overtime. This was a game that the Chargers should have won but quarterback Phillip Rivers fumbled a snap with 48-seconds left with the Chargers deep in Chief's territory. Kansas City (4-3) not only their fourth straight win but tie both the Chargers and Oakland for the lead in the AFC West Division.

Wyoming freshman quarterback Brett Smith has been named the Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Smith threw for 341 yards in the Pokes 30-27 win over San Diego State on Saturday night. Smith threw just four incomplete passes in the first half, while throwing for two touchdowns and running for two more. The Cowboys (5-2) overall and 2-0 in conference play will host TCU on Saturday at noon at Memorial Stadium.

The Wyoming high school football playoffs move into the semifinals on Friday afternoon and night. In 4A, Natrona will play host to Cheyenne East, and Sheridan will host Gillette. Both games begin at 6pm, with the Mustangs/T-Birds game on AM 1400 ESPN.
