Freshman guard Trey Washington scored a team-high 16 points off the bench, including two free throws with two seconds left, to give the University of Wyoming an 85-81 exhibition win over UC-Colorado Springs on Thursday night in the Arena-Auditorium. After leading by 26 points five minutes into the second half, the Mountain Lions whittled the lead to one possession with less than 10 seconds left, before Washington sealed the Pokes’ 24th-consecutive exhibition victory. The Cowboys will open up the season November the 8th, hosting Tennesee-Martin

“We accomplished two things tonight,” UW head coach Larry Shyatt said. “We had a very good first half, and were able to rest our starters considerably the second half.  The starters gave us a pretty good last 10 minutes of the first half. I think it was about a 24-point game at half.”

The Cowboys built a 52-28 halftime lead and were up by 26 at the 15-minute mark of the second half, as several of the young Pokes came into the game. The Mountain Lions were able to cut UW’s advantage to single digits with three minutes left and a one possession game at 84-81 with seven seconds left, but Washington hit two freebies with two seconds left to ice the game.

Washington’s 16 came on 3-of-7 from the field, 2-of-4 beyond the arc and a perfect 8-of-8 at the free throw line. He also added two assists and a steal in a team-high 25 minutes of action. Junior forward Larry Nance Jr. added 14 points, eight rebounds, four blocks and two steals in a perfect 4-of-4 from the field and 6-of-6 at the free throw line. Senior guard Nathan Sobey rounded out UW’s double-digit scorers with 11 points. All 12 Pokes that played scored and 11 played more than 10 minutes.
