After a challenging start to the season, the Wyoming Cowgirls are at home for the second time this year. They host the UniWyo Invite this weekend.

Wyoming (2-5) posted a 1-2 record at last weekend’s Sports Imports D.C. Koehl Classic in Columbus, OH. The Cowgirls lost in three sets to No. 10 BYU and No. 11 Ohio State last Friday before a three set victory over LIU-Brooklyn Saturday. Redshirt freshmen Bayly Poor was a bright spot with eight kills against the Buckeyes and a career-high 11 versus LIU-Brooklyn. Poor was named to the All-Tournament team.

The Cowgirls have face four teams ranked in the top 25 this season. They are winless against those foes.

Head coach Chad Callihan said of the tests they’ve faced they’ve handled it okay.

“Mentally we were trying to be prepared for this; never easy to lose when you’re used to winning. I think the tough thing for us was beyond our opponent, we were still trying to figure out our side of the net… That’s probably not a good combination when you’re playing top 20 opponents.

Now that they’ve settled on their line-up, Callihan feels they’ll have more consistency as they move forward.

Friday and Saturday will be the first time the Cowgirls have been at home during a weekend this season.

Callihan added, “While I don’t think being at home guarantees us anything, as I sit here watching film on our upcoming opponents, I do think there’s some familiarity here. A little more comfortable in this facility (home –UniWyo Sports Complex), than the 20,000 seat arena we just left a couple of days ago.”

This weekend’s schedule pits UW against Samford at 6:30 p.m. Friday. Saturday’s slate starts at noon against CSU-Northridge and concludes versus Eastern Washington at 7 p.m. The Cowgirls are meeting Samford for the first time. They are 1-1 against the CSUN Matadors and 2-0 versus the Eastern Washington Eagles.

All the matches will be played in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
