Cowgirls Win Soccer Exhibition

The University of Wyoming Cowgirl Soccer team rallied from a two-goal deficit to earn a 3-2 victory over Omaha on Thursday afternoon at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.  Three different Cowgirls tallied goals in the contest for UW in their first exhibition match of the season.

“In the future we can’t allow ourselves to be in that position,” UW head coach Pete Cuadrado said. “But give our girls credit, the fight that it took to get back into the game locking them in their own zone in the second half was great.”

Sophomore Candace Scriberras cruised past Omaha defenders off a great pass from junior Mandy Meyer to give the Cowgirls their first lead of the match in the 73^rd minute. The Cowgirls defense took control from there with a pair of key saves from redshirt freshman Cassidy Entsminger late in the second half.

Omaha tallied two early goals by Morgan Westenburg to jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first 11 minutes of the contest. Freshman Alyssa Murray cut the Mavericks lead in half scoring from midfield to make the match 2-1 going into the half.

The Cowgirls controlled the tempo early in the second half and maintained it throughout the period earning the tying mark in the 52^nd minute with a goal from sophomore Kimmy Burbank. Burbank netted the tying goal off a scramble in front of the Omaha net.

Scriberras’ goal would give the Cowgirls the lead and the win, 3-2. The Cowgirls recorded 17 shots in the match and pressured Omaha in the second half with four corner kicks.

The Cowgirls had 21 players play in the match with 12 of those players recording at least one shot. Two goalkeepers played for Wyoming with sophomore Georgia Rowntree getting the start with Entsminger earning the win recording two saves in the second half.

“We started to solidify some positions,” Cuadrado said. “It’s the first time, since I’ve been here, that we’ve had two exhibitions. It’s really nice to use them and be able to get tons of film on our team.”

The Cowgirls return to the pitch on Monday against Colorado School of Mines with kickoff set for 5 p.m. MT at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
