The latest installment of the 2014 Coaches and media football poll has a bit of history in it.

There are two teams, ranked either for the first time ever, or the first time in a long time. In the previous, the 1-1 South Bison sneak into the 4A rankings for the first time ever. Their win at Central convinced enough voters to put them in the top five. They are still behind the big four, however. Gillette remains #1 with 12 of the 20 votes. Natrona took the other 8 and rank 2nd. Sheridan moves up to third, East drops to fourth. South makes the short trip to East in a ranked game this Friday night.

The other history maker is Farson-Eden. The Pronghorns went 4-5 a year ago, but never broke into the rankings. Before that, their best chance for ranking might have come back in 1989 when Bubba O’Neill, now the AD at Evanston, coached them. F-E ranks fifth this week in 6-man. Guernsey-Sunrise is still #1 followed by Meeteetse and Kaycee, who are tied for #2. Little Snake River is in the polls at fourth. The top 4 battle each other this Saturday to open conference play. The Vikings visit the Buckaroos, while the Longhorns will venture into the Snake Pit in Baggs, to play the Rattlers.

Looking at the rest of the rankings Powell, Big Horn and Cokeville remain #1.

In 3A, the Panthers took 15 of the 19 top votes. Cody took the other 4 and rank second. The Broncs will host #3 Douglas this weekend. Riverton moves to fourth, Jackson is now fifth, by 1 vote ahead of Worland. Speaking of the Warriors, they have an interesting game this weekend at Torrington, who like them, is also looking to start their season 2-0.

2A has Big Horn 1 vote shy of unanimous at the top. Thermopolis took the 1 vote from the 20 total and rank 2nd. Mountain View slips to third with Newcastle up to fourth. Wheatland is now fifth, with Lovell out of the top five, by 1 vote. Thermopolis goes to Wheatland for a ranked affair on Friday.

Cokeville took 12 of the 14 #1 votes in 1A, then it was all East teams. The Panthers are the only team in the West that won last week. The other seven teams are all 0-1. Conversely, seven teams in the East and 1-0 after a week. Lusk ranks 2nd with the other 2 top ballots.  Southeast, Lingle-Ft. Laramie, and Upton-Sundance round out the top five. 1A newcomer Tongue River is just outside the polls in sixth with Moorcroft right behind them. In fact Moorcroft visits TR this weekend, which will assure that the winner will have a 2-0 record. The winner could crack the polls next week. Elsewhere, Lusk plays a Saturday game at Sundance against the Patriots.
