Former UW Golfer Finishes 3rd in Canada

Former Wyoming golfer David Hearn shot a final-round 72 (E ) on Sunday to fall just short of his first PGA Tour victory at the 2015 RBC Canadian Open. During the final round at the Glen Abbey Golf Course, Hearn recorded three birdies and finished with a four-round total of 273 (-15). Hearn finished two shots behind Jason Day who won his fourth PGA Tour event with a score of 271 (-17), as Bubba Watson took home second place one stroke behind.

“We are all very proud of David,” UW head golf coach Joe Jensen said. “This last month he has played very well and today was a great finish for him on a tough course. With the way he has played he is starting to put himself into the conversation for the Presidents Cup.”

After the third round on Saturday, Hearn moved into position to become the first Canadian to win the Canadian Open in 61 years. He had a two-stroke lead over World No. 3 Watson and No. 10 Day heading into the final round. Hearn also became the first Canadian to have a 54-hole lead at the Canadian Open since Mike Weir in 2004. Pat Fletcher was the last Canadian winner in 1954 at Point Grey in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Hearn shot an opening round 69 (-3), including a 35 on the back nine with four birdies after Thursday’s competition. He totaled eight birdies and recorded a 64 (-8) on Friday to remain in contention with two rounds to go. During Saturday’s third round, Hearn had five birdies for a third-day score of 68 (-4).

“With David being from that area and all that he has going on, I am very happy with how he has competed during this tournament as well as the last few he has played in,” Jensen added. “I hope he enjoys the next few days as his recently launched foundation, the David Hearn Foundation, kicks off its partnership with the Alzheimer Society.”

Hearn, a native of Brampton, Ontario, was a member of the Cowboy golf team from 1997-2001. He was a First Team All-Mountain West selection in 2001 and qualified for NCAA Regionals three times. Hearn will be inducted into the University of Wyoming Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday, Sept. 4th.
