The National Weather Service Riverton Office today has issued a red flag warning for much of central Wyoming because of the extreme fire danger.

The conditions could aggravate the growth of and the fighting of wildfires in much of the state.

The red flag warning area extends from west of Dubois east to the Natrona-Converse county lines, and from Hot Springs and Johnson counties on the north to southern Fremont and Natrona Counties.

"A red flag warning means critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly," according to the National Weather Service. "A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior."

The combination of these elements, the Weather Service said, "is very favorable to create explosive fire growth this afternoon."
