Shootout Takes 20 Rounds – NHL Roundup

UNDATED (AP) — Fans of the NHL shootout format have to love what happened in Florida on Tuesday.

The Panthers and Washington Capitals shattered an NHL record by going 20 rounds in the shootout, five more than the previous mark set by the Caps and New York Rangers nine years ago. Nick Bjugstad (BYOOG'-stad) ended it by beating Braden Holtby for the Panthers' sixth shootout goal in a 2-1 win over Washington.

Bjugstad and teammate Jussi Jokinen (YOO'-see YOH'-kih-nehn) each took two attempts in the shootout, scoring once. Alex Ovechkin (oh-VEHCH'-kihn) scored the Capitals' first shootout goal before missing on his team's final attempt.

Elsewhere on ice:

— Toronto is 19-9-3 after earning its sixth consecutive win, beating the Western Conference-leading Anaheim Ducks 6-2. Phil Kessel (KES'-ul), Tyler Bozak (BOH'-zak) and James van Riemsdyk (van-REEMZ'-dyk) each scored once and had an assist for the Maple Leafs, who top the NHL in goals per game.

— Chicago is within two points of the West-leading Ducks after Patrick Kane scored the tiebreaking goal on a power play with 3:28 remaining in the Blackhawks' 5-3 win over Minnesota. Kane and Jonathan Toews (tayvz) each had a goal and two assists as the Hawks won for the 10th time in 11 games.

— Vladimir Tarasenko reached the 20-goal mark by notching his second hat trick of the season in the St. Louis Blues' fifth straight win, 5-2 over Los Angeles. The Kings led 2-1 midway through the third period until Kevin Shattenkirk, Tarasenko and Alexander Steen scored during a 3 ½-minute span.

— Nashville pulled out a 3-2 win over Boston on Derek Roy's (royz) shootout goal. Pekka Rinne (PEHK'-uh REE'-nay) stopped 33 shots in his league-high 20th win.

— The New York Rangers are 3-0 on their four-game western swing after Rick Nash scored twice, including a short-handed goal in a 5-2 triumph at Calgary. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 29 shots and Derek Stepan (STEP'-ahn) had a goal and an assist in the Rangers' fourth straight victory.

— Tyler Johnson scored the game-winner and had an assist as Tampa Bay won for the second time in six games, beating the Flyers 3-1 in Philadelphia. Andrei Vasilevskiy (va-sih-LEF'-skee) stopped 23 shots in his NHL debut to help the Lightning pull within one point of East-leading Pittsburgh.

— Columbus beat Detroit 1-0 on shootout goals by Ryan Johansen and Boone Jenner. Sergei Bobrovsky (boh-BRAHF'-skee) stopped 30 shots to backstop the Blue Jackets' seventh consecutive win.

— Alex Galchenyuk (gahl-CHEHN'-yuhk) registered his first career hat trick in Montreal's 4-1 verdict over Carolina. Max Pacioretty (pash-uh-RET'-ee) had three assists and Carey Price stopped 25 shots as the Canadiens won their third in a row.

— Winnipeg whipped Buffalo 5-1 behind Mark Scheifele's (SHYF'-leez) two goals and one assist. Michael Frolik (froh-LEEK') had two points, including a short-handed goal that snapped a 1-1 tie midway through the second period.

— Edmonton lost its first game under interim coach Craig MacTavish as Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored with three-tenths of a second left in overtime to give Arizona a 2-1 win over the Oilers. The Oilers are 1-12-4 in their last 17 games, averaging just 1.65 goals in that span.

UNDATED (AP) — Pittsburgh forward Beau Bennett has the mumps, joining Penguins captain Sidney Crosby and a dozen other players across the NHL with the disease. The team confirmed the diagnosis after a series of tests.

Bennett was placed in isolation Monday after showing symptoms of the ailment.

And the New York Islanders are rescheduling their annual holiday hospital visits to a later date due to the ongoing mumps outbreak in the league.

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — Jacob Trouba (TROO'-buh) will be out for at least six weeks with an upper-body injury, leaving the Winnipeg Jets without one of their top defensemen.

Trouba has provided four goals and eight assists in 31 games after scoring 29 points in 65 contests last season.
