Wyoming sophomore safety Andrew Wingard has been chosen at the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career.

Wingard recorded a career-high 17 tackles, including 10 solo stops in the Cowboys 38-17 win at Colorado State last Saturday. He also had a sack and a tackle for loss.

The Pokes defense, led by Wingard, shutout the Rams in the second half and limited them to 134 yards on offense. With just over four minutes left, CSU faced fourth and five at the Wyoming 24-yard line. Wingard registered his solo sack for a loss of 18 yards. That ended the final scoring threat for Colorado State and preserved UW’s second-half shutout.

Wingard’s 17 tackles are tied for 21st for a single game in Cowboy football history.

For the season, Wingard is averaging 11.8 tackles per game. That leads the MW and is No. 4 in the country. His 6.2 solo tackles per game are second in the conference and 12th nationally.

The Mountain West made the announcement Monday. Boise State running back Jeremy McNichols and Air Force punter Steve Brosy were named MW Offensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively.
