Chase Appleby’s sack and forced fumble resulted in a safety that gave the Wyoming Cowboys a stunning 30-28 upset of No. 13 Boise State Saturday in Laramie.

Here's a recap of the home stretch in the Cowboys upset after the key play by Appleby.

Wyoming (6-2, 4-0) posted its first upset over a top 25 team since 2002. The Cowboys also rallied from two different 14-point deficits. They came into the game a 13.5 point underdog. It marked the program’s first victory in 11 tries against the Broncos.

With Boise State ahead 28-20, the Pokes put together a ten play, 75-yard drive. Josh Allen scrambled to his right and found Tanner Gentry in the back of the end-zone for a 27-yard touchdown on third and 13. After a two-point pass to Jake Maulhardt, the game was tied.

The teams exchanged punts, and on the Broncos second play Appleby twisted around to his right and hit Boise State QB Brett Rypien. The ball popped free and rolled out of the back of the end-zone. That safety gave Wyoming its first lead of the game.

Allen threw for a career-best 274 yards and three touchdowns. Two of those went to tight end Jacob Hollister, who had a big night. He finished with career-highs of six receptions for 144 yards. Appleby had three solo tackles, a sack, two tackles for loss and two forced fumbles.

Boise State (7-1, 3-1) led 14-0 after a pair of Jeremy McNichols TD runs. A 16-yard touchdown run from Alex Mattison put the Broncos up 21-7 with just over six minutes left in the first half.

The Cowboys scored the next 13 points on two Cooper Rothe field goals and an Allen to Hollister 28-yard pass. That pulled UW within 21-20.

Boise State responded with a 33-yard Thomas Sperbeck to Rypien TD pass with 10:50 left.

Wyoming is now in sole possession of first place in the Mountain West Mountain Division. They’re also already bowl eligible. The Pokes return to action next Saturday, Nov. 5 versus Utah State. The game starts at 8:15 p.m.
