Christensen, Smith Receive Mountain West Honors

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Wyoming coach Dave Christensen has been named the Mountain West Conference coach of the year.

UW quarterback Brett Smith was named the conference's freshman of the year.

Christensen is the first Cowboy head football coach to receive conference coach of the year honors since Joe Tiller received the honor in 1996.

It is the first time a Wyoming head football coach has earned coach of the year honors in the Mountain West Conference era.

Smith is just the second Wyoming freshman to earn Mountain West freshman of the year. UW quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels earned the honor in 2009.

Wyoming had no players earn first team all-conference, but the Cowboys had eight second team honorees, including five on defense and three on offense.
